Honveer Singh Randhawa, the Conservative Party of Surrey's candidate for Mayor, today announced his "Complete Communities Plan," a commitment to bring recreation centres, swimming pools, libraries, sports fields, and playgrounds within reach of every Surrey family, no matter which neighbourhood they call home.
As Surrey's population approaches 700,000 residents, Randhawa says City Hall must do more to ensure community infrastructure keeps pace with growth.
"Surrey has some excellent recreation centres and aquatic facilities, but they have not kept up with the rapid growth of our city," said Randhawa. "Families in many neighbourhoods still travel long distances for swimming lessons, sports programs, library services, and recreational activities. That needs to change."
As a father of a young child, and someone who helps care for senior parents, Randhawa says he understands first-hand why accessible recreation and community facilities matter.
"When children can easily access swimming lessons, sports, and recreation programs, they thrive. When seniors have nearby facilities, they remain active, healthy, and connected. Every Surrey resident deserves these opportunities, regardless of where they live."
A Randhawa administration will work toward ensuring every Surrey resident has access to a recreation centre, library, playground, or major community facility within approximately a 15-minute drive of their home. The plan includes:
• Free recreation centre memberships for children under 12.
• Free recreation centre memberships for seniors.
• Free recreation centre memberships for residents with disabilities.
• New investment in recreation centres, swimming pools, libraries, playgrounds, and sports facilities in underserved neighbourhoods.
• A city-wide review of recreation and library access to identify service gaps.
• Protecting land today for future recreation centres before it is lost to development.
• Partnerships with private-sector and community organizations to build world-class aquatic and recreation facilities while protecting taxpayers.
Randhawa said several of Surrey's fastest-growing areas deserve special attention as the city plans for the future, including Cloverdale East and Hillcrest, Clayton Heights and East Clayton, Fraser Heights and Port Kells, South Newton and Panorama Ridge, Campbell Heights and the South Surrey growth corridor, and Anniedale-Tynehead and the surrounding North Surrey neighbourhoods.
"These communities have experienced tremendous growth and deserve fair access to recreation facilities, swimming pools, sports fields, libraries, and playgrounds," said Randhawa.
Randhawa says Surrey residents have every right to expect development-related revenues to be invested back into the infrastructure that supports them.
"For too long, new housing has been approved while supporting amenities lag behind," said Randhawa. "Developers contribute millions through development charges and growth-related fees. My administration will ensure those funds are used for the purpose residents expect: building recreation centres, pools, libraries, parks, playgrounds, roads, and community facilities."
"People do not just move into a house, they move into a community," said Randhawa. "A complete community includes places where children can play, families can gather, seniors can stay active, and residents can enjoy a high quality of life close to home."
"On October 17, Surrey residents have an opportunity to elect a City Hall that puts families first, plans responsibly for growth, and delivers the infrastructure our communities deserve."
